New Mum? Don’t Compare Yourself to Others!by Your Baby Club
It’s estimated that approximately 10% to 15% of women suffer from postpartum mood disorders, including depression. This is largely brought on by physical changes in a woman’s body, but it can also be heightened by emotional issues. This is why it’s important that new mums don’t compare themselves to others after giving birth. Feeling inadequate – even when this is misplaced or unfounded – can greatly reduce your enjoyment of motherhood. Here are three other reasons why it’s wise to focus on yourself (and your baby) rather than compare yourself to others.
Motherhood is a constant learning curve. While it might take you a while to get a hang of the likes of breastfeeding and coddling, it’s only natural that some things will take a while to master. Don’t forget, motherhood is a marathon, not a sprint and no one is expecting you to make it look easy. Forget about what the other mums are doing because you’ll just have different strengths and weaknesses.
Your attention should be on your baby and your own wellbeing. If you’re spending time trying to keep up with Joneses, you’ll actually be doing a disservice to yourself and your child. Do what feels right for you and move at a pace that you’re comfortable with, otherwise you could find that your attention is absorbed on what other mummies are up to.
You won’t be the only mum who won’t settle for anything less than 100% when it comes to raising their baby. However, other mothers might not let on that they’re in the same boat as you. It’s not uncommon to see women project a false image onto the world, making it appear that they’re finding the whole experience a doddle. This could mean that you’re measuring yourself against unrealistic standards.
Give it a go!
Yes, admittedly it can be hard not to look outward at what others are doing when you’re new to motherhood. However, if you can resist the urge to do so you should find the whole experience to be much more enjoyable.
